Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what information he has on the safety record of four-wheel drive vehicles manufactured by Suzuki;

(2) what investigations have recently been conducted by his Department into the safety record of four-wheel drive vehicles manufactured by Suzuki;

(3) if he has any plans to seek to prevent further sales of four-wheel drive vehicles manufactured by Suzuki;

(4) if he has any plans to seek to obtain the recall of four-wheel drive vehicles manufactured by Suzuki.

[holding answer 26 July 1988]: The Department is investigating allegations by the Consumers' Association that these vehicles are unstable under certain conditions. The question is being discussed with both Suzuki and the Consumers' Association. The Department is studying the test results available and seeking to establish whether (here is any unacceptable road safety risk.
