HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 c598W
Mr. Onslow

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what recent steps he has taken to remind other road users of the need to give due consideration to horses and riders on the public highway; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Advice to road users on the consideration needed when encountering horses on the roads is given in the Highway Code and the Department's "Driving" manual. Our TV filler, "Passing Horses," is shown once a week on average. Valuable current guidance is also issued by the British Horse Society and the AA, and we endorse this.

The basic message is "slow down, allow plenty of room, and don't sound your horn or rev your engine."
