Mr. JacksonThe student support review group has received written evidence from 106 organisations and individuals, nine of which have also given oral evidence. In addition, since the beginning of 1987, the Department has received seven petitions, signed by a total of 1,300 people, and well over 1,500 letters.

Mr. JacksonSince the end of May we have received 13 letters from hon. Members and members of the public about membership of local unions and a further 10 letters about membership of the National Union of Students.

Mr. JacksonI refer my hon. Friend to the answer given by my right hon. Friend to my hon. Friend the Member for 405W Thurrock (Mr.Janman) on 18 April at column 292, in which he indicated that it was intended to collect the information requested as part of a fact-finding survey of student unions. A questionnaire is due to be sent to a sample of institutions in the near future.
