HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 cc557-8W
18. Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what steps have been taken to improve security in Northern Ireland since 30 June.

Mr. Tom King

Since 30 June, the reorganisation of Army deployments has been completed with the establishment of a new brigade headquarters in Armagh. Various new physical improvements have been completed. New legislative measures to combat terrorism have been brought forward. A proposal for a draft Police and Criminal Evidence Order has also been published. Meetings between senior Royal Ulster Constabulary and Garda Siochana officers have continued and a further meeting between the Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the Commissioner of the Garda Siochana took place at the Intergovernmental Conference on 27 July, which discussed a number of proposals for further improving the level of cross-border security co-operation.

24. Mr. Maginnis

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the security situation in the Province.

Mr. Tom King

I refer the hon. Gentleman to the answer I gave earlier today to the hon. Member for Brent, East (Mr. Livingstone).
