14. Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the Northern Ireland unemployment figures for June.

Mr. Tom King

There were 115,640 unemployed at 9 June 1988. I am pleased to note that this represented a decrease of 516 from May and a decrease of 9,910 from June 1987.

21. Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about trends in employment in Northern Ireland during the last five years.

Mr. Viggers

At March 1988, the latest date for which figures are available, there were an estimated 495,580 employees in employment in Northern Ireland. This figure is 1,850 higher than the corresponding estimate five years ago and 5,000 higher than the figure one year ago.
