HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 c394W
Mr. Cryer

To ask the Prime Minister what are the salary, expenses, pension, period of office, and criteria for the appointment of a European Economic Community commissioner.

The Prime Minister

The basic annual salary of a commissioner is BFr 5,592,708 (at the present exchange rate about £86,000) with certain allowances payable depending on personal circumstances; travel and hotel expenses are paid on a reimbursement basis plus a subsistence allowable for travel; pensions are calculated at 4–5 per cent, of last annual salary per year of service. The period of office is four years.

As to the criteria, I have nothing to add to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Linlithgow (Mr. Dalyell) on 20 July at column 607.
