HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 c406W
Mr. George

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much has been spent by his Department in each of the past five years on the evaluation of departmental programmes; and what proportion this constitutes of(a) the amount allocated for evaluation and (b) the Department's total budget.

Mrs. Rumbold

Evaluation can take many forms, including the work of Her Majesty's inspectorate, research projects and ad hoc investigations. A separate costing of the evaluation component of these is not available, but total spending on relevant activities has been:

£ million
1986–87 1987–88 1988–89
Her Majesty's Inspectorate (recurrent costs) 18.1 19.9 21.8
Research and development (total) 13.8 14.1 15.6
Total 31.9 34.0 37.4
The DES programme, including central and local government expenditure, has been 15,691.0 17,169.0 17,971.0
