HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 c276W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his forcast of(a) the increase in rent income in 1989–90 as a result of the relaxation of rent controls, (b) the amount which will be subject to tax and the expected yield and (c) the extra amount which the Exchequer will pay out to tenants by way of rent relief.

Mr. Trippier

I have been asked to reply.

What the difference will be between rents of lettings to which rent regulation no longer applies and rents for lettings on regulated tenancies is too uncertain at this stage for worthwhile forecasts to be made of the additional tax yield and additional expenditure on housing benefit.
