HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 c311W
37. Mr. Bowis

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is contemplating any further measures to secure the future of the Gaelic language.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

In the current financial year some £198,000 will be provided as grant aid under the provisions of the National Heritage (Scotland) Act 1985 to bodies which support Gaelic; £500,000 will be spent to bring forward projects under the specific grant scheme for Gaelic education. The Scottish Arts Council has allocated approximately £120,000 and the Highlands and Islands Development Board some £195,000 in support of Gaelic projects.
