To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current level of expenditure on conventional submarine technology.

Mr. Sainsbury

The majority of expenditure on conventional submarines is currently directed towards the introduction into service of the type 2400 upholder class. As stated in table 3.2 of the 1988 "Statement on the Defence Estimates", volume 2, the current commitment of funds to this programme is £620 million.
