To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many vacancies there are in the Factory Inspectorate; what has been the total number of vacancies by year from 1979 to date; by what region; and if he will make a statement.

On 1 July 1988 there were 40 vacancies in the Factory Inspectorate. Recruitment competitions were organised in the period 1979 to 1988 to fill the following number of vacancies.

It is not possible to break down the total number of vacancies geographically. A further recruitment competition for factory inspectors is planned for the autumn of 1988.
