To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many and what percentage of the membership of the Police Complaints Authority are from ethnic minorities.

The Police Complaints Authority at present has 13 members, including a chairman and two deputy chairmen. Of the 13, three (or 23 per cent.) are from ethnic minorities. There is one vacancy.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many complaints the Police Complaints Authority has received during the last 12 months for which records are available; and how many and what percentage of such complaints are from people known to belong to ethnic minorities.

In the 12 months to 30 June 1988 the authority dealt with 12,347 complaints. The ethnic origins of complainants are not known.
