To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners at Bedford prison were locked up for an average of 20 hours or more a day in the most recent convenient week.

In the seven-day period ended 16 July 1988, five prisoners were locked in their cells for an average of 20 hours or more a day. All five had been segregated under rule 43 for reasons of good order and discipline.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many hours' association prisoners at Bedford prison receive per week.

Currently, prisoners at Bedford are allowed about eight hours of association per week.
