To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give(a) the total number of mandatory student awards made by his Department in each academic year since 1979 and (b) the total value of those awards in (i) cash terms and (ii) real terms in 1988 prices.

[holding answer 22 July 1988]: The value of students' maintenance allowances and tuition fees paid under the students allowances scheme and the postgraduate students allowances scheme, in cash terms, and in real terms on a constant 1987–88 base (1988–89 figures are not yet available) was as follows:
