To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many safety inspectors were employed by his Department on the inspection of North sea oil and gas installations and related equipment in each year since 1965.

The figures are not available in the form requested. However, since 1976 an average of around 12 to 15 surveyor years per annum have been devoted to the survey of fire-fighting equipment and life-saving appliances on those installations.
