HC Deb 25 July 1988 vol 138 cc48-9W
Mr. Neil Hamilton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the total number and amount of fines imposed by magistrates' courts in England and Wales which remain unpaid to date.

Mr. John Patten

The total amount of fines and fees imposed by magistrates' courts in England and Wales which remained unpaid at 31 December 1987, the latest date for which complete information is available, was £84,660,000. Part of this sum consists of fines for which the time allowed for payment had not expired. The latest available information on numbers of unpaid fines is that at 31 December 1986 there were about 1,280,000.
