HC Deb 25 July 1988 vol 138 cc44-5W
Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action his Department is taking in response to the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights on 2 March 1987 concerning discretionary life sentences.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The implications of the judgment are still under consideration. Further applications by life sentence prisoners are awaiting hearing by the European Commission of Human Rights and we shall take account of the progress of those applications in considering whether any amendments may be necessary to our law and practice.
