HC Deb 22 July 1988 vol 137 cc858-9W
Mr. Cryer

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he is yet in a position to invoke the safeguard clause in the EEC/Turkey agreement governing textile imports due to the effects on the West Yorkshire textile industry arising from imports of acrylic fibre yarn; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alan Clark

[holding answer 21 July 1988]: Imports of Turkish acrylic yarn have fallen sharply in the first five months of this year compared with the same period last year, and the safeguard clause is not applicable. However, an anti-dumping application from the industry is under consideration by the EC Commission.
