To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1) what was the total spending by the Duchy and Department of Trade and Industry, respectively. on press, public relations and advertising, respectively, in 1987–88;

(2) what is the latest figure for the estimated expenditure by the Duchy office and Department of Trade and Industry, respectively, on press and public relations during 1988–89;

(3) what is the latest figure for the estimated spending in 1988–89 by the Duchy office and Department of Trade and Industry, respectively, on (a) television advertising (b) radio advertising, (c) newspaper advertising, and (d) other promotional material.

[holding answer 21 July 1988]: The latest estimated expenditure by my Department on press and public relations in 1987–88 and 1988–89 is as follows. There is no separate expenditure on behalf of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Expenditure by my Department on advertising in 1987–88 was £9,139,000. The latest expenditure to date in 1988–89 by my Department on advertising and other promotional material is as follows. There has been no expenditure on radio advertising since 1 April. Detailed decisions on expenditure for the remainder of the year have yet to be taken. There is no separate expenditure on behalf of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
