HC Deb 21 July 1988 vol 137 cc796-802W
Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total number of people in employment in Scotland and in each travel-to-work area for each month between January 1987 and June 1988 inclusive.

Mr. Lang

Monthly estimates are not available. The table gives quarterly estimates of the civilian work force in employment, which comprises employees in employment, the self-employed, and participants on work-related Government training programmes. These figures are available only for Scotland as a whole.

1The estimates of participants on work-related Government training programmes are not seasonally adjusted.

The latest estimates of the numbers of employees in employment in each travel-to-work area come from the 1984 census of employment: some results are given in the December 1987 "Scottish Economic Bulletin", which is available in the Library of the House. The latest estimates of self-employment by area within Scotland come from the 1981 census of population. The numbers of participants on work-related Government training programmes are not collected for individual travel-to-work areas.

Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the estimated total number of self-employed people in Scotland and in each travel-towork area for each month between January 1987 and June 1988 inclusive.

Mr. Lang

The only available estimates relate to Scotland and are as follows:

Self-employment in Scotland
Thousands
1986
December 200
1987
March 197
June 194
September 196
December 198
1988
March 200

These estimates are prepared by the Department of Employment on the basis of the 1981 census of population updated by the labour force surveys. The figures for June each year only are regularly published, and figures for other quarters are estimated by interpolation and projection: all figures are subject to sampling errors. The figures cannot be reliably broken down between travel-to-work areas.

Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total number of 16 and 17-year-olds registered as unemployed in Scotland and in each travel-to-work area for each month between January 1987 and June 1988 inclusive.

Mr. Lang

The information requested is available on a quarterly basis only.

The total number of unemployed claimants aged 16 and 17 in Scotland and in each travel-to-work area for each quarterly period between January 1987 and June 1988 inclusive is shown in the table.
