HC Deb 21 July 1988 vol 137 c818W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what is the purpose of the JET programme; and how much it has so far cost the EEC.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The JET experiment forms part of the European fusion programme which aims to establish fusion as a major energy source. The essential objective of JET is to obtain and study a high temperature plasma in conditions and dimensions approaching those needed in a fusion reactor. To the end of 1987, expenditure on JET totalled some 750 MioECU (£500 million at current rates of exchange).
