To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what was the total spending by his Department on press, public relations and advertising, respectively, in 1987–88.

Mr. Parkinson

The provisional figure for expenditure in 1987–88 by my Department on press and public relations is £460,000 and on advertising is £1.5 million. The figures include:

  1. (i) expenditure by the Press Office;
  2. (ii) staff costs (salaries, accommodation and common services) for all permanent information service and support staff in post in the Press Office, including the public inquiry point, on 31 March 1988.
  3. (iii) expenditure on advertising by the Energy Efficiency Office and the Offshore Supplies Office, and in respect of publicity in connection with the collection of the second call on British Gas shares.
