HC Deb 21 July 1988 vol 137 c751W
29. Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people in England and Wales were prosecuted in 1987 for driving vehicles without(a) MOT certificates and (b) tax discs.

Mr. John Patten

The latest available figures related to 1986 when there were 187,000 proceedings at magistrates' courts for vehicle test certificate offences and 182,000 for failure to pay the appropriate motor vehicle licence duty. There were also 15,700 proceedings for offences of a motor vehicle licence being obscured or not affixed. The available information is published annually in table 5 of "Offences Relating to Motor Vehicles, England and Wales, Supplementary Tables", copies of which are in the Library. Figures for 1987 will be published later this year.
