To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will list(a) the number of cases of toxic shock syndrome diagnosed in Britain for each of the last five years and (b) the number of deaths from toxic shock syndrome for each of the last five years;

(2) what proportion of the total number of cases of toxic shock syndrome over the last five years occurred in menstruating women using tampons.

The information available centrally is that in the years 1982 to 1986 inclusive, for Great Britain, there has been one death identified with mention of toxic shock syndrome on the death certificate, that of a female in 1983.
