HL Deb 19 July 1988 vol 499 c1295WA
Lord Swinfen

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps it proposes to take in the light of the recent European Civil Aviation Conference recommendation on Chapter 2 jet aircraft.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

The Government undertook in the Airports Policy White Paper of 1985 to work towards the eventual phasing out of Chapter 2 aircraft. It was recognised that this would be a long and expensive process. Since then we have continued to play an active role within ECAC and thus welcome, as an important first step, its recommendation to ban the addition of nearly all Chapter 2 jet aircraft to member state's registers from 1st October 1990. To give effect to the recommendation in the UK will require legislation. The necessary statutory instrument will be introduced next year.
