§ 28. Mr. SkinnerTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he has received any complaints about the drug Trasidrex with regard to allergies or lung problems; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. NewtonTrasidrex is a combination of a beta-blocker (oxprenolol hydrochloride) and a thiazide diuretic (cyclopenthiazide), used in the treatment of hypertension. We are not aware of any complaints received about this drug. However, since 1979 the Committee on Safety of Medicines has received reports from doctors of two cases of bronchospasm and two of dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing) in association with Trasidrex. In each of these cases, the reports relate to the most important suspected reaction to the drug, and do not necessarily indicate a causal relationship.
The manufacturer's data sheet for Trasidrex warns doctors that
as with other beta-blockers, bronchospasm … may occasionally be precipitated in susceptible patients",and advises thatparticular caution should be observed when treating asthmatics, chronic bronchitics or other individuals where bronchospasm may be provoked".The data sheet also notes thatin a few cases, allergic skin reactions … have been reported".
