HC Deb 12 July 1988 vol 137 cc149-50W
21. Mr. Knowles

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the social security computerisation programme.

Mr. Portillo

The Department is making a massive investment in information technology to achieve greater efficiency in administration, a better service to the public and better jobs for staff. A system has already been delivered, on time and working well, for the administration of family credit. The systems for income support and pensions will start to be installed during the next 12 months: modernisation of the existing unemployment benefit system is also on the way. The network should be complete by mid-1992, and will represent a mojor step forward in the administration of social security.

54. Mr. Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the social security computerisation programme.

79. Mrs. Gillian Shephard

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what progress is being made with the introduction of computerisation in his Department.

Mr. Portillo
