To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what discussions he has had with leaders of the dental profession on a new National Health Service contract for general dental services; and if he will make a statement.

The Government indicated in the White Paper on primary care published last year that they would discuss new arrangements for the remuneration of general dental practitioners with the profession. Officials of the Department have already begun such discussions relating initially to the collection of the necessary information and the technical points which need to be clarified before the start of formal negotiations, which we hope will be later in the year.
