Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will express the number of unemployed claimants and their dependants as a percentage of all claimants for each of the last 10 years.

The table shows the number of unemployed supplementary benefit claimants and their dependants as a percentage of all supplementary benefit claimants and their dependants.

Mr. Portillo

In May 1987, the latest date for which this information is available, 4,896,000 claimants had a total of 3,309,000 dependents.
