[holding answer 15 January 1988]: Information on health authority expenditure by type of patient is not collected centrally. Hospital cost returns submitted to the Department show expenditure on hospitals of different types and cost returns in respect of community health services show expenditure relating to the major areas of activity.

Hospital cost returns submitted by district health authorities in the Trent region, since their inception on 1 April 1982, show total current expenditure on hospitals categorised as geriatric, mental handicap and mental illness as follows (nil expenditure indicates that a district had no hospitals in that particular category during the year).
