§ Mr. WorthingtonTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how much blood was donated in(a) Scotland and (b) Greater Glasgow health board area in each month in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987; and in each year for both areas, by how much the amount donated was above or below self-sufficiency for those areas.
§ Mr. Michael Forsyth[holding answer, Monday 2 January 1988]: Greater Glasgow health board is one of six boards covered by the West of Scotland region of the Scottish national blood transfusion service and statistics relating to that board could be separately identified only at disporportionate cost. The following table shows the requested information for the West of Scotland region as a whole, and for Scotland. The information is aggregated quarterly: a monthly breakdown is not readily available.
Blood collected in Scotland is for use wherever it is needed, shortages where they arise in a particular area being met from surpluses in other areas. Scotland has been self-sufficient in blood and all normally requires blood products since the end of 1983.
