HC Deb 25 January 1988 vol 126 c77W
60. Mr. Burt

To ask the Minister for the Arts what special provisions he has made to help the new Tate gallery in Liverpool.

Mr. Luce

The Government have made a significant financial contribution to this important new development.

The capital cost of the new Tate gallery, Liverpool, has been met by a combination of public funds (OAL £0.5 million and Merseyside Development Corporation £5.1 million) and privately raised funds (£1.7 million from various benefactors).

The allocation of £6.3 million for the running costs of the Tate gallery, which I announced on 16 December, at columns 531–34, takes account of the needs of the new gallery in Liverpool. Comparing like with like, this represents an increase of 19 per cent. on the figure for the current year. No specific sum is earmarked within this total for the new Liverpool gallery as it is for the trustees and director of the Tate to decide on the disposition of the funds available to them.
