To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how much has been spent on nurse training in Scotland in each of the last 10 years; and how much has been spent by each of the health boards on nurse training in each of the past 10 years.

support staff at colleges of nursing and midwifery, including midwifery teachers in 1986–87 and the costs of the National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting for Scotland and its predecessors. The second column includes learners' national insurance, superannuation and salary costs, but makes no allowance for the service contribution made by learners during training, which varies according to the course and the particular college of nursing. Figures for expenditure on learners' remuneration for years prior to 1983–84 are not directly available, and figures for individual health boards are not held centrally.
