To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many cases of meningitis have been reported in the Sunderland, Durham and Hartlepool areas in each year from 1985.

Meningitis can be caused by several different organisms. The hon. Member is probably particularly interested in meningococcal meningitis: the table gives figures for this and for all forms of acute meningitis.
