Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many civil servants by grade resigned from his Department in the financial year 1986–87; what percentage of the total number of staff employed by his Department this represents; and what measures he is taking to reduce the level of staff turnover.

This represents 9.44 per cent, of the total number of staff employed by the Department of Employment Group.

We continue to use a range of personnel measures to reduce the level of staff turnover including effective recruitment of the staff we need, realistic levels of pay, reasonable working conditions, career development and training, good communications and employee involvement in the work, and recognition of a job well done.
