To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what evidence he possesses that nuclear materials owned by EURATOM, and under safeguards, have been illegally diverted from the Federal Republic of Germany to Libya and Pakistan.

Mr. Mellor

We have no evidence of illegal diversion of nuclear material from the Federal Republic of Germany to Libya and Pakistan. The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany are currently investigating such allegations with the assistance of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The agency stated on 18 January that it was satisfied there had been no unauthorised diversion of nuclear material in significant quantities. We await further details.
