HC Deb 21 January 1988 vol 125 c771W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much of his Department's current budget is devoted to providing home defence, defined as the approximate military equivalent of civil defence, for the protection of the United Kingdom in the event of hostilities in Europe.

Mr. Ian Stewart

There is no clear military equivalent to civil defence. I therefore refer the hon. Member to figure 10 of the 1987 "Statement on the Defence Estimates", which attributes £2,219 million to defence of the home base.
