HC Deb 20 January 1988 vol 125 cc746-7W
Dr. Twinn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how much his Department has spent on assistance under the Housing Defects Act for people living in PRC houses.

Mr. Waldegrave

Under the housing defects legislation central government contributes towards the costs local authorities incur in assisting eligible owners of designated dwellings with reinstatement grants or repurchase. Authorities claim Exchequer contribution a year in arrears, and the payments take the form of annuities, payable over 20 years. The total contribution claimed by authorities for each financial year following the introduction of the HDA scheme, and the Exchequer payments made on those claims, are as follows:—

Claims made £ Claims paid £
1984–85 21,963 21,963
1985–86 2,250,297 2,200,659
1986–87 4,836,225 12,079,997
1 Including payments made in January 1988.
