HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 c499W
Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what developments have taken place since April 1987 in the implementation of recommendation 13 of the Sizewell B report.

Mr. Michael Spicer

Recommendations 13(a) and 13(c) were addressed in the decision letter issued by my right hon. Friend the Member for Worcester (Mr. Walker) on 12 March 1987, copies of which were placed in the Library of the House. As regards recommendation 13(b), I refer the hon. Member to the answer given on 16 December 1987 at column 516 by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State to the hon. Member for Colne Valley (Mr. Riddick).

Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he has any plans to ask the chairman of the Central Electricity Generating Board to halt the development of Sizewell B pressurised water reactor pending the recruitment of a full complement of inspectors by Her Majesty's Nuclear Installations Inspectorate.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I am advised by the Health and Safety Executive that the present staffing level of the NII is sufficient to discharge its responsibilities for Sizewell. Following the recent campaign to recruit more nuclear inspectors, the staffing level is increasing and is expected to reach the agreed complement of 120 inspectors by 1 April 1988.
