HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 c491W
Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been remanded in custody awaiting trial for more than six months; and what percentage this is of the total number of people remanded in custody in each of the years from 1983 to 1987.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The readily available information is of the estimated length of time spent by the population of untried prisoners on 30 June since the first remand in custody, but it includes any intervening time spent on bail. These figures are published annually in "Prison Statistics England and Wales"— table 2(c) of the latest volume, 1986, Cm. 210 — copies of which are in the Library. Figures for 1987 are not yet available.
