HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 c584W
Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the numbers of nurses and the total pay at current and at 1987 prices of nurses employed directly by the National Health Service(a) full-time, (b) part-time and (c) in total in (i) hospitals and (ii) other National Health Service services for each year since 1979.

Mr. Newton

[holding answer 14 December 1987]: The information requested about the numbers of nurses is given in Table 1:

1 Expenditure on non-NHS (agency, etc.) nursing and midwifery staff is excluded.
2 The figures for the earlier years have been expressed at 1986–87 prices by the use of the Gross Domestic Product deflator.

Separate information for full time and part time staff is not available centrally.
