§ Mr. Peter WalkerOn 10 December 1987 the numbers of unemployed claimants in Newport district, Gwent and Wales were 7,909, 22,915 and 146,119 respectively. Unadjusted figures for 1979 are not available on a basis that enables a valid comparison to be made.

§ Mr. Peter WalkerOn 10 December 1987 there were 146,119 unemployed claimants in Wales, 27,427 fewer than a year earlier—a fall of 2.3 percentage points. During 1987 Wales experienced the biggest annual fall in unemployment since the second world war.
Dr. ThomasTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total number of employees in employment in Wales; and what is the corresponding figure for 1979.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerThere were 1,036,572 employees in employment in Wales in September 1979 and 874,900 in September 1987.
