9. Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people are unemployed in Clwyd and in Wales.

Mr. Peter Walker

On 10 December 1987 the numbers of unemployed claimants in Clwyd and in Wales were 19,117 and 146,119 respectively.

14. Mr. Roy Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what are the latest unadjusted figures for unemployment in(a) Newport, (b) Gwent and (c) Wales; and if he will give the equivalent figures for 1979 or the most nearly comparable basis.

Mr. Peter Walker

On 10 December 1987 the numbers of unemployed claimants in Newport district, Gwent and Wales were 7,909, 22,915 and 146,119 respectively. Unadjusted figures for 1979 are not available on a basis that enables a valid comparison to be made.

Mr. Peter Walker

On 10 December 1987 there were 146,119 unemployed claimants in Wales, 27,427 fewer than a year earlier—a fall of 2.3 percentage points. During 1987 Wales experienced the biggest annual fall in unemployment since the second world war.

Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total number of employees in employment in Wales; and what is the corresponding figure for 1979.

Mr. Peter Walker
