HC Deb 13 January 1988 vol 125 c284W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will make it his policy to accept all accident remedial schemes on highways as eligible for transport supplementary grant; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

No.

Transport supplementary grant (TSG) is paid in support of expenditure on roads of more than local importance, such as roads forming part of the primary route network (PRN), designated roads in London, bypasses and other roads that relieve communities of longer-distance through traffic, and links to the PRN and motorways. Expenditure on accident remedial schemes on all such roads may be accepted for TSG. There are no plans to change the scope of TSG, which represents the national taxpayer's interest in local roads. Schemes of purely local significance are funded by local authorities from the other sources of finance available to them.
