To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many escalators were, at the latest available date, out of service and undergoing repairs on the London underground system.

I understand that on 4 January 1988, 37 of the Underground's 276 escalators were out of service either for repair or planned replacement, including those damaged in the King's Cross fire.
