HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 c63W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are the implications for the number of warheads to be permitted on missiles on the Trident D-5 system, to be purchased from the United States, of agreements concluded on missile warhead ceilings, in the recent Washington summit between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Only the United States and Soviet Governments are party to the START negotiations. The ceiling of 4,900 warheads, announced in the United States-Soviet joint statement issued following the recent summit talks in Washington, relates therefore only to United States and Soviet strategic ballistic systems. It has no implications for the modernisation of the United Kingdom's strategic deterrent.
