To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what is the cost of the RNSSIX missile and its associated systems;
(2) if he will outline the purpose of the RNSSIX missile.

§ Mr. Sainsbury
It is assumed that these questions refer to the RN SSIXS satellite communications system. This system is fitted in most Royal Navy submarines, also in the Invincible class carriers and ashore, to facilitate voice and teleprinter communications between the British and United States navies.
The cost of an installation depends upon the configuration of the equipment fitted, but ranges between £270,000 and £400,000.
