HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 cc15-6W
Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners were held on remand in the Somerset and Avon police authority area on 30 April and 30 September in each year since 1983; and how many of these prisoners had been waiting for trial for(a) more than nine months and (b) between six and nine months.

Mr. John Patten

[holding answer 17 December 1987]: Populations of the two establishments are given in the table. Information for all the dates on the time spent in custody by the untried population of the establishments could be provided only at disproportionate cost. However, it is estimated that on 30 June 1987, 19 untried prisoners had been initially remanded into custody between six and nine months earlier and five untried prisoners more than nine months earlier. On 30 June 1983 the figures were six and nine respectively. These periods include any intervening time spent on bail.

Notifiable offences of burglary and theft recorded by the police in which firearms were reported to have been stolen, by police force area and principal weapon.
