HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 cc41-2W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if, pursuant to the statement by the Minister of State, the hon. and learned Member for Putney (Mr. Mellor)Official Report, 10 December, column 630, he will set out the uses to which the nuclear material arising from withdrawn cruise missile warheads, to which he makes reference, may be put; and if any provisions have been made to transfer ownership to civil uses.

Mr. Ian Stewart

I have been asked to reply.

The warheads for ground-launched cruise missiles currently based in the United Kingdom as well as the missiles themselves, are wholly the property of the United States Government. The warheads will, therefore, be returned to the United States, and the use of the nuclear material they contain is entirely a matter for the United States Government.
