HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 cc126-7W
Mr. Jack Thompson

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what has been the total level of regional aid granted to the clothing industry in the Morpeth and Ashington employment areas since 1975 by regional development grant, regional selective assistance and northern selective assistance to date.

Mr. Atkins

Identifiable regional aid granted to the clothing and knitwear industry in the Castle Morpeth and Wansbeck local authority districts since 1975 amounted to £0.1 million. However this does not include aid under the original regional development grant scheme for which sufficiently detailed information is not available.

Mr. Jack Thompson

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what grants have come from the European Economic Community since 1979 for the clothing industry in the Morpeth and Ashington employment areas.

Mr. Atkins

There have been no grants from the European Community since 1979 for the clothing industry companies in this area.

Mr. Jack Thompson

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what has been the estimated number of jobs created or saved by regional or European Economic Community grant aid since 1979 in the Morpeth and Ashington employment areas.

Mr. Atkins

It was estimated that around 2,650 jobs would be created or safeguarded as a result of regional aid granted in the Castle Morpeth and Wansbeck local authority districts since 1979. This does not include aid under the original regional development grant (RDG) scheme which was not job-related and for which sufficiently detailed information is in any case not available.

Note: Aid from the European regional development fund (ERDF) may be payable in respect of companies in receipt of RDG and/or regional selective assistance. Such ERDF support does not go to companies, but is instead retained by the Government to increase the total level of assistance to industry.

Mr. Jack Thompson

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what clothing companies in the Morpeth and Ashington employment areas have received European Economic Community aid since 1979.

Mr. Atkins

The following clothing companies in the Castle Morpeth and Wansbeck local authority districts have been granted regional aid since 1979:

  • Hadrian Fashions Ltd.
  • P. Shapira Ltd.

There have been no grants from the European Community since 1979 for clothing industry companies in these districts.

Note: For Regional Development Grants detailed records are only available for the revised scheme introduced in November 1984.

Mr. Jack Thompson

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what proportion of total grant aid to the Morpeth and Ashington employment areas the grant aid to the clothing industry has represented since 1979.

Mr. Atkins

Since 1979, identifiable grant aid to the clothing and knitwear industry in the Castle Morpeth and Wansbeck local authority districts was 1 per cent. of total aid granted by my Department to the area under the same schemes.

Note: The schemes referred to are the revised regional development grant scheme, regional selective assistance, support for major projects, innovation linked investment scheme, and support for innovation. Sufficiently detailed information is not available for the original regional development grant scheme.
