§ Mr. McNamaraTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what information he has as to how many people from the Republic of Ireland settled in England, Scotland and Wales in each year from 1982 to 1987 inclusive, for each of the age groups 16 to 18 years, 18 to 25 years and 25 years and over;
(2) what information he has as to how many people from Northern Ireland settled in England, Scotland and Wales in each year from 1982 to 1987 inclusive, for each of the age groups 16 to 18 years, 18 to 25 years and 25 years and over.
§ Mr. Renton[holding answer 18 February 1988]: British citizens, and Irish citizens travelling within the common travel area, are not subject to immigration control and Irish citizens do not need to apply to settle in Great Britain. Based on information from the labour force surveys, it is estimated that the usually resident population of Great Britain in mid-1986 included some 30,000 persons who had been born in the Republic of Ireland and had entered Great Britain since 1980. A corresponding estimate for persons from Northern Ireland, and the other information requested, are not available.
